Welsh Stick Chair
This is a very specific version of my absolute favourite example of vernacular furniture making. This iteration of the Stick chair was scaled to 4/5ths of full size, to specifically fit a 4 year olds body. However, not wishing it to become redundant in a few years time, some elements were slightly scaled up so it’s just as comfy for a fully grown adult posterior as a child’s.
Balancing these variable scales, without compromising overall proportions was a fun challenge and I was thrilled with the outcome. Charming, playful and extremely comfortable.
Made in lovely characterful Scottish Elm that will only improve with age, there are subtle textural variations between surfaces, soft curves and contemporary lines to bring this vernacular style of chair making in to the 21st century.
